Research was conducted in 1997 and 1998 to evaluate narrow row spacing and glufosinate in glufosinate-resistant corn. Glufosinate-resistant corn was planted in 51- and 102-cm row spacings at the same plant populations. Herbicide treatments included glufosinate alone and in different herbicide combinations. Atrazine plus glufosinate enhanced Palmer amaranth control compared to glufosinate alone. Control of johnsongrass, ivyleaf morningglory, entireleaf morningglory, Texas panicum, smellmellon, browntop panicum, and toothed spurge with glufosinate was greater than 82%. Common sunflower control with glufosinate was greater than 95%. Atrazine followed by glufosinate applications provided at least 94% control of all species and was the most consistent herbicide system used. Row spacing had little effect on weed control. Crop injury to glufosinate-resistant corn was minimal with glufosinate and atrazine plus glufosinate combinations.

We study unitary quotients of the free product unitary pivotal category ${{A}_{2}}\,*\,{{T}_{2}}$. We show that such quotients are parametrized by an integer $n\,\ge \,1$ and an $2n$–th root of unity $\omega $. We show that for $n\,=\,1,\,2,\,3$, there is exactly one quotient and $\omega \,=\,1$. For $4\,\le \,n\,\le \,10$, we show that there are no such quotients. Our methods also apply to quotients of ${{T}_{2}}\,*\,{{T}_{2}}$, where we have a similar result.
The essence of our method is a consistency check on jellyfish relations. While we only treat the specific cases of ${{A}_{2}}\,*\,{{T}_{2}}$ and ${{T}_{2}}\,*\,{{T}_{2}}$, we anticipate that our technique can be extended to a general method for proving the nonexistence of planar algebras with a specified principal graph.
During the preparation of this manuscript, we learnt of Liu's independent result on composites of ${{A}_{3}}$ and ${{A}_{4}}$ subfactor planar algebras (arxiv:1308.5691). In 1994, Bisch–Haagerup showed that the principal graph of a composite of ${{A}_{3}}$ and ${{A}_{4}}$ must fit into a certain family, and Liu has classified all such subfactor planar algebras. We explain the connection between the quotient categories and the corresponding composite subfactor planar algebras. As a corollary of Liu's result, there are no such quotient categories for $n\,\ge \,4$.
This is an abridged version of arxiv:1308.5723.

Let Qd denote the hypercube of dimension d. Given d ⩾ m, a spanning subgraph G of Qd is said to be (Qd, Qm)-saturated if it does not contain Qm as a subgraph but adding any edge of E(Qd)\E(G) creates a copy of Qm in G. Answering a question of Johnson and Pinto [27], we show that for every fixed m ⩾ 2 the minimum number of edges in a (Qd, Qm)-saturated graph is Θ(2d).
We also study weak saturation, which is a form of bootstrap percolation. A spanning subgraph of Qd is said to be weakly (Qd, Qm)-saturated if the edges of E(Qd)\E(G) can be added to G one at a time so that each added edge creates a new copy of Qm. Answering another question of Johnson and Pinto [27], we determine the minimum number of edges in a weakly (Qd, Qm)-saturated graph for all d ⩾ m ⩾ 1. More generally, we determine the minimum number of edges in a subgraph of the d-dimensional grid Pkd which is weakly saturated with respect to ‘axis aligned’ copies of a smaller grid Prm. We also study weak saturation of cycles in the grid.

Introduction: Tobacco use and its harm continue to increase in low and middle income countries (LMICs) globally. Smoking cessation is the most effective means of reducing morbidity and mortality from tobacco use. Increasing the prevalence of ex-users is an indicator of population cessation.
Aims: This study provides the first examination of factors associated with ex-tobacco use status in the Dominican Republic (DR), a LMIC in the Latin America and Caribbean region.
Methods: Baseline surveillance was conducted for 1,177 randomly selected households in seven economically disadvantaged DR communities (total N = 2,680 adult household members).
Results: Ex-user prevalence was 10.6% (1.0%–18.5% across communities), 14.8% were current users (9.1–20.4), and quit ratios were 41.7% (9.7%–52.7%). Among ever users, females (OR 2.02, 95% CI 1.41, 2.90), older adults (45–64: OR 1.75, 95% CI 1.12, 2.74; 65+: OR 2.09, 95% CI 1.29, 3.39), and those who could read/write (OR 1.64, 95% CI 1.08, 2.50), had health conditions (OR 1.63, 95% CI 1.11, 2.41), and lived with ex-users (OR 1.70, 95% CI 1.12, 2.58) were over 60% to two times as likely to be ex-users. Those from remote communities (OR 0.52, 95% CI 0.36, 0.74), using chewed tobacco (OR 0.14, 95% CI 0.04, 0.48) and living with tobacco users (OR 0.55, 95% CI 0.37, 0.81) were less likely to be ex-users.
Conclusions: Ex-user prevalence and quit ratios were lower than for high income countries. Implementing broad tobacco control measures, combined with clinically targeting vulnerable groups, may increase tobacco cessation to most effectively reduce this public health crisis.

Eradication of introduced species is often necessary to conserve native biota on islands. Seven wild turkeys Meleagris gallopavo were introduced to Santa Cruz Island, California, in 1975 and the population began to irrupt in the early 2000s. Turkeys posed a variety of threats to native species, including that they could replace the previously eradicated population of feral pigs Sus scrofa as a prey subsidy for golden eagles Aquila chrysaetos, which through incidental predation had driven three subspecies of island fox Urocyon littoralis to near extinction. We implemented a four-phase programme to eradicate the turkey population, based on general principles for eradication efforts. For example, we focused on preventing individual turkeys from becoming aware of our methods, which increased the likelihood we would be able to detect and dispatch all of the birds. Leveraging the tendency of turkeys to aggregate during winter, we used baited drop nets, precision shooting, and monitoring of surgically sterilized, radio-telemetered ‘Judas turkeys’ to eliminate the population. We estimate the population comprised 310 individuals when the project began in 2006 and that the last bird died in December 2012. Methods used in this project could be applied to other alien bird eradication programmes, of which there are few examples in the scientific literature.

Summary
INTRODUCTION
The long-term persistence of populations in fragmented landscapes depends on connectivity among disjunct habitat patches. Retaining or restoring habitat corridors has become a dominant strategy for maintaining connectivity in fragmented landscapes (e.g., Bennett 1999; Groves 2003; this volume), especially when the surrounding matrix is hostile to dispersing wildlife. The biological merits of any particular corridor, however, will depend upon a variety of factors, including the ecology of the targets (species, communities, natural processes) it is intended to serve, as well as the specific attributes of the corridor itself, the habitat matrix in which it is embedded, and the core areas it is connecting. Often, the effects of corridors on target biota are unknown. In some cases, corridors may be ineffective or even counter-productive (e.g., Simberloff and Cox 1987; Hess 1994; Dobson et al. 1999; Crooks and Suarez Chapter 18). Biological advantages and disadvantages of corridors have been discussed elsewhere (e.g., Beier and Noss 1998; Groves 2003; Crooks and Sanjayan Chapter 1). Here, we focus on how feasibility considerations factor into the decision-making process of conservation practitioners deciding where best to invest resources in connectivity conservation.
In an ideal world, wildlife corridor planning would occur with detailed knowledge of biological resource needs, multiple options for corridor design, unlimited resources for implementation, and cooperative landowners. More often, virtually nothing is known about plant and animal movement needs within a landscape, human land uses have already greatly constrained corridor options, conservation funding is inadequate, and landowners and political entities are recalcitrant (Swenson and Franklin 2000).

The Pulsed PECVD technique involves modulating the standard 13.56 MHz RF plasma, in the kHz range. This allows an increase in the electron density during the ‘ON’ cycle, while in the ‘OFF’ cycle neutralizing the ions responsible for dust formation in the plasma. In this work, we report the increase of i-layer growth rate and silane gas utilization rate (GUR) for amorphous Si p-i-n solar cells grown in a large area (30 cm × 40 cm) single chamber deposition system. The i-layer growth rate of 5.4 Å/sec with a GUR of >15% has been achieved, which shows a device efficiency of 8.3% (almost same as of our conventional PECVD grown a-Si:H solar cell with ilayer growth rate of ∼1 Å/sec). We also deposited microcrystalline Si p-i-n devices using the Pulsed PECVD technique. The crystallite orientation of the films changes from a random to a (220) orientation near the microcrystalline-to-amorphous transition. The effects of crystallite orientation, grain boundaries and ion bombardment during growth on the solar cell performances are investigated. An efficiency of 4.8% for single junction μc-Si:H p-i-n device has been achieved for the i-layer thickness of 0.9 μm.

Optically assisted, metal induced crystallization (MIC) was used to convert amorphous Si films, deposited on Al coated glass substrates, into polycrystalline Si (pc-Si). The study investigated the effects of deposition temperature, process temperature, and film thickness on the grain orientation, grain size, and crystallization front of the processed films. Furthermore, we have attempted to examine the role of Al in MIC – in particular, whether the metal can be confined to the interface while grain enhancement occurs.

For the “Hot Wire” chemical vapor deposition technique (HWCVD) method to be applicable for photovoltaic applications, certain critical technical issues need to be addressed and resolved such as: lifetime of the filaments, reproducibility, large area demonstration of the material and stable devices. We have developed a new approach (patent applied for) which addresses some of these problems, specifically longevity of the filaments and reproducibility of the materials produced. The new filament material used has so far shown no appreciable degradation even after deposition of >200 μm of amorphous silicon (a-Si). We report that this can produce “state-ofthe-art” a-Si with a dark conductivity of <10-10 (Ohm*cm)-1 and photoconductivity of >10-5 (Ohm*cm)-1 this material can also be doped p- or n-type. We also provide data using XRD as well as the Raman spectra. These materials have been incorporated into simple Schottky barrier structures. The development of microcrystalline silicon materials is also discussed.
